PPE Event: T-Park Visit and Fellowship Gathering on 5 February 2023

Project in Charge : PPE Chair Peter Long & RTN Anne Loh
In order to let our members getting more understanding about the environmental infrastructure development in Hong Kong and how HKSAR government can showcase the “Waste-to-Energy” ambition of HKSAR government for the good of the community, RCHKNP organized the T-Park visit on 5 Feb 2023 and there were total 18 participants joining the event.
The visit included the guided tour to introduce and explain the operation of individual process, starting from sewage sludge reception, deodorization, incineration, power generation, flue gas treatment, to ash and receiving handling. In particular, T-Park has self-sufficient in water supply in which an advanced desalination plant is adopted to purify seawater into potable and process water, while rainwater is collected for non-potable use. Another highlight is the implementation of “Waste-To-Energy” technology which utilizes the sewage sludge as fuel, and the heat energy from the sludge incineration process, which applies fluidized bed technology for efficient combustion, is recovered and converted into electricity from steam turbine generators that can support the needs of the entire facility of T-Park. When running at full capacity, it can produce up to 2 megawatts of surplus electricity for the public power grid. After incineration process, sludge will be converted into ash and residues, resulting in a total reduction of 90% of the original sludge volume. It can therefore cut down the quantity of waste to be disposed in the landfill sites and also reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by up to 237,000 tonnes a year. All participants had benefited from the visit and realized that T-PARK is more than just a plant, but a place worthwhile to visit in order to learn and engage in Hong Kong’s green force through its recreational and educational facilities.
After T-Park visit, there was a fellowship lunch at Lau Fau Shan and all participants had another enjoyable afternoon together with delicious seafood, networking and sightseeing.
