Fellowship dinner on August 7, 2023

On August 7, 2023, a fellowship dinner was organized by our Fellowship Chair – Samantha Lin, aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the club and the community. The event was proven an enlightening one. The night featured two guest speakers – 1. Maggie Ching, the DEI Chair of the club, and 2. Rotarian Kenneth Cheng, the Principal of (道慈佛社楊日霖紀念學校)Buddhist To Chi Fat She Yeung Yat Lam Memorial School, a school for children with special needs. The speakers shared their insights and experiences on DEI, emphasizing the importance of implementing these principles within the club’s operations and service projects.

Maggie, the DEI Chair, began by sharing knowledge from MyRotary’s learning centre providing a comprehensive overview of DEI and its significance in fostering a more inclusive society. She explained the differences between equality and equity, emphasizing the need to go beyond treating everyone equally and instead striving for equitable opportunities and outcomes. Maggie and IPP Peter (DEI Co-Chair) highlighted how the Club could integrate these principles into its activities, including running the club and planning service projects. Both DEI Co Chair stressed the importance of considering the diverse needs and backgrounds of individuals while ensuring equal access and opportunities for all members.
Rtn. Kenneth, the Principal, shared his valuable insights on how DEI is put into practice in his educational institution. He discussed the various challenges faced by students with disabilities, such as mild intellectual disbility, sensory impairments, learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and emotional disorders. Kenneth emphasized that DEI inclusion should extend not only to the students but also to their caregivers and family members. He explained how the school provided tailored support and resources to meet the unique needs of each student, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Both speakers echoed the importance of actively implementing DEI principles within the Rotary Club and the broader community. They emphasized that DEI should not be viewed as a mere buzzword but rather as a fundamental aspect of fostering a more equitable and inclusive society.
Our fruitful night ends with lots of fun and laughter! Wrapping up with a birthday celebration for Rtn. Samantha Lin, IPP Peter Pang and Rtn. Kenneth Cheng.
